Store your shredded cheese to keep it fresh

When you shred your own cheese, it's beneficial to prepare extra and store it for future use, ensuring you always have some on hand. However, even if you use cornstarch to prevent clumping, proper storage is essential to avoid spoilage.
If you plan to use the extra cheese within a few weeks, you can keep it in the refrigerator in a ziplock bag or an airtight container. Shredded hard cheeses can remain fresh for three to four weeks in the fridge, provided they are kept away from air and moisture.
If you have a larger quantity of shredded cheese and need to store it for a longer period, freezing is an excellent option to maintain its freshness. While freezing can alter the cheese's texture over time, it effectively preserves it for later use. To freeze your cheese shreds, place them in a freezer-safe ziplock bag and gently squeeze out as much air as possible. Once frozen, your shredded cheese can last for three to four months before its quality starts to decline. When you're ready to use the frozen shreds, you can thaw them in the fridge overnight or, if suitable, add them directly to your cooking if melting is required.
