Start smart stocking your fridge with produce

While a vibrant bowl of fruit may seem like an appealing centerpiece, reconsider before placing that arrangement of lemons and limes on the dining table. Citrus fruits can be stored together, but items like lemons, limes, apples, and avocados—known for producing ethylene and being sensitive to it—should never be piled into a bowl.
In general, fruits of the same type tend to coexist well. Berries can be grouped together, as can salad greens and root vegetables. However, ethylene-producing melons should not be mixed with other fruits. Make use of your refrigerator drawers to store similar fruits together. It's also important to prepare your produce properly before storing it. Remove the stems from root vegetables, and try to avoid cutting or peeling most fruits and vegetables. Keeping them whole helps extend their freshness.
