Virginia was the first state to sell canned beer

In 1933, American Can, the company responsible for the canning process, sought out breweries willing to experiment with selling their beer in cans. Given the heavy weight and high shipping costs of bottles, American Can believed they could find success with U.S. breweries if they could convince consumers to embrace canned beer. The Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company, based in Newark, New Jersey, found the concept appealing and agreed to participate—on the condition that the beer would be distributed far enough from New Jersey to avoid embarrassment if it was poorly received. Consequently, American Can decided to distribute the cans six hours away in Richmond, Virginia.
The experiment exceeded the expectations of both American Can and Gottfried Krueger; of the 2,000 samples distributed, an impressive 91% of tasters enjoyed and approved of the canned beer. With such positive feedback, it didn't take long for beer cans to gain immense popularity. By late 1935, over 200 million beer cans had been produced, establishing them as the primary method for shipping beer ever since. The process was further simplified in 1975 with the introduction of a fixed beer tab, allowing consumers to open cans without needing to punch a hole first. Cheers to that!
