The tasty history of Pimm's

Similar to the iconic British mixed drink, the gin and tonic, which is best enjoyed in a balloon-shaped glass to amplify the gin's aromas, Pimm's No. 1 Cup was originally created for medicinal purposes. Its inventor, James Pimm, began selling it at his oyster bar in London in the 1820s as a digestive aid. He referred to it as the house cup, which inspired the "cup" in the cocktail's eventual name, and he started bottling his creation in the 1860s.
Regarding the "No. 1" designation, Pimm also developed other variations, including No. 2, which featured Scotch, and No. 3, made with brandy. While most of Pimm's liqueurs have since disappeared, Pimm's No. 3 is still available, marketed as Pimm's Winter Cup. If you're interested in making a Pimm's Cup cocktail, it's quite straightforward: mix 1 ¾ ounces of Pimm's No. 1 with 5 ounces of lemonade or ginger ale, add slices of your favorite fruits (such as citrus, strawberries, or apples), and include a slice of cucumber in a Collins glass filled with ice. Stir the mixture, garnish with a sprig of mint, and enjoy!
