Crucial components of a Denver sandwich

As previously noted, a Denver breakfast sandwich is made with just five basic ingredients: ham, cheese, onions, green bell peppers, and, of course, eggs. While Julia Child's beloved omelette also featured ham, this dish uses traditional scrambled eggs to achieve the ideal texture and flavor balance. If you prefer the soft, creamy consistency of a French omelette, that's perfectly fine, but a firm, fluffy scramble or mini-omelet is the way to go for an authentic Denver sandwich.
Some may enjoy their egg mix slightly firm, but one of the best ways to enhance an omelet is to quickly sauté your fillings before incorporating them into the eggs. This method takes a little extra time, but browning the ham, onions, and peppers together adds a savory, meaty burst of flavor and ensures a tender texture for your sandwich. Just remember to let your pan and fillings cool down before adding the eggs to avoid overcooking.
As the eggs cook, sprinkle some shredded Colby Jack cheese on top and toast your bread—sourdough, rye, and ciabatta are all excellent choices. If you can't imagine a veggie scramble without tomatoes, feel free to include them, though this will technically turn your Denver sandwich into a Western sandwich. There's also a North Denver variation that gives this classic a twist with mozzarella cheese, green chiles, and marinara. While that sounds tempting, if you want to make a true Denver sandwich, start with the original Denver omelet.
